LIVE MUSIC at the Cluny

Live music is very important to us at the Cluny. It is fundamental to the soul of the outlet. It is now recognised as one of the most important venues for breaking bands in the region and a natural outlet for mid-range, underground national and international touring bands – and that understanding will grow even stronger this year.

We recently installed a fantastic new sound system with 48 channel desk and top of range Yamaha amps and cracking speakers. Sound quality is magnificent and bands love playing here.

We have a wide spectrum of musical style, with an emphasis on modern breaking bands, but we also have a strong, established jazz club, ‘Schmazz’ and the Cluny is the home of ‘Jumpin' Hot Club’  (www.jumpinhot.com) the city’s rock ‘n’ roll masterpieces. We also host the majority of gigs presented by Canny Gigs (www.cannygigs.com).

If you are interested in music, keep your eye on this slot! Get your tickets quick. We work hard  to showcase lots of new and established bands from the region and around the country - infact, around the world. Check out everything that's happening in the region on Generator's website

We have had a major building job completed this year, to remove the huge brick arches which made sound quality and sight lines not perfect from the raised area. The situation is now much much better.

There are also 2 new ladies toilets in the venue right next to the new emergency exit doors, by the main doors in.

We have also had a new ventilation system installed which has made the atmosphere much more pleasant and less sweaty.

We've also had a new lighting scheme installed, but that doesn't affect the sounds!!

Made In Poland Festival: Tomek Grden double bass concert

Come and enjoy most entertaining night with Tomek Grden playing comedy style One Man Show on double bass. Ever young artist combines the yet forgotten swings with a comedian approach to himself and the audience. He performs by himself, but hardly ever does he sing by himself as the audience can’t stop themselves and sing or whistle songs along.

His programme includes songs such as Singing In The Rain, Strangers In The Night, What A Wonderful World, Fever, Blue Suede Shoes, as well as Polish hits from past times Zimny dran (The Cold Bastard), Ostatnia niedziela (The Last Sunday) as well as his author show The Beast.

Canny Gigs present: Ian McNabb

Ian has been a professional musician since the age of fifteen, when he used to play at workingmen's social clubs in the northwest of England, although he now reckons he's only just getting started. June sees him playing a handful of UK solo dates which includes the Cluny on Friday 5th June. He really is fabulous live and has a wealth of material stretching back to the Icicle Works glory days. Even if the sun is shining on the day, leave the BBQ until Saturday and give yourself a Friday night treat, right up and close to a five star talent.

Ayanna

Unique and captivating, Ayanna Witter-Johnson is a composer, vocalist and cellist who has developed musically from a diverse background of mixed cultures.  After extensive collaborations with Nitin Sawhney and Courtney Pine - and a year spent developing new work in New York, Ayanna has composed new material for her trio which comprises Fraser Fifield, the astonishing piper and low whistle player who is equally conversant on soprano saxophone and the inventive pianist Robert Mitchell.

The music that you hear tonight has been developed as part of a Dartington Residency in collaboration with Serious.  Supported by the PRS for Music Foundation www.prsformusicfoundation.com

WT Feaster - "Wish You Well" UK album launch

Following his hugely successful tour last year, Travis Feaster is set to return to our shores once more – this time to launch his eagerly awaited second studio album “Wish You Well”.

And we predict fans of W T Feaster will be flocking to The Cluny Newcastle who are hosting the event on the 28 August this year.

Quote from Blues Wax about his appearance at the Maryport Blues Festival 2009 stated:

“Feastermania’ is about to enter the blues vocabulary given the number of fans from all over the UK who followed the three talented musicians to Newcastle upon Tyne to see their next gig, and the prolific ‘You Tube’ and other website postings.  From the moment Travis Feaster confidently launched into ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’ until the finale, ‘Hey Joe’, the local nuclear power station was made redundant.  The raw energy generated seemed to suck over 1000 spectators into the marquee within minutes as Feaster pushed his guitar to unprecedented heights with an amazing dexterity reminiscent of Hendrix and SRV.”

His versatile sets will include tracks from his new album, and also stunning performances covering legends such as Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Traffic, Albert King to name a few.  And of course, the now well known favourites from his debut album “Long Overdue”.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see this outstanding talent.  Walk, run, catch a bus train or plane – whatever it takes, just get there and witness a remarkable performance!

Get your signed copy of the new album on the night.
