Where are we?

We are in a largely commercial valley called Ouseburn, 1 mile east of the city centre on the road to Byker and Walker, almost under Byker Bridge.

Our outlet is part of a large old whisky bottling plant, now home to many of the north-east's top arts and crafts people. It is an area rich in industrial heritage, with the City Farm right next door. There are boats on the Ouse, which runs into the Tyne half a mile south. It's a fascinating area and the Ouseburn Trust organises popular walking tours of the valley.

Considerable public investment is going into improving the environment. Music is very important in the valley, with many recording studios, rehearsal rooms and venues. The 5 valley pubs form one of the best pub crawls in the country!

How to get there

Gulp! Quite frankly, unless you know where we are, there are easier places to find!

Car: From the city centre - come east along New Bridge Street towards Byker and Walker, past the new Northumbria University 'lattice' building and at the third set of traffic lights, by the Tanners pub, turn right, then immediately left down the bank. We are at the bottom of the hill.
From the east - from the roundabout at the bottom of the Byker by-pass, turn down Byker Bank into Ouseburn. Just after the bridge in the valley bottom, turn right into Lime Street. The Cluny is on the right.

Bus: Any that travel over Byker Bridge and stop by St. Dominics (12, 39, 40, 62, 63)

Quaylink bus: Lime Street

Metro: Manors / Byker

If in doubt, get a TAXI!

A bit about the outlet

The Cluny is one of only two pubs in Newcastle to be in the 2004 Good Pub Guide - that's how good it is!!

It has
- a large comfortable (but clearly ex-industrial) main
L-shaped bar;
- a 250 person capacity function room with bar, on two levels, with a stage. This is a major live music venue and it is also regularly hired out for weddings, parties and meetings;
- a gallery, with comfortable settees, which is part of Newcastle's art scene. This is a no-smoking and family area.

The outlet opened for the first time in 1999. The Head Of Steam Ltd took over in November 2002 and it has since built a reputation as a GREAT BAR and top live music venue. Though not easy to get to for many, it attracts different types of people from the whole of Tyneside, including many arty and music people.

Opening hours

Sunday to Thursday: 12.00 - 23.00
