Where are we?

We are conspicuously situated on the main road into Newcastle from the west and overlook the longest remaining stretch of Newcastle town wall.

We are right next door to one of Newcastle's major theatres - the newly titled 'Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre (previously The Journal Tyne Theatre). The o2 Academy is only 100 yards away, the Metro Arena is a five minute walk and Dance City is just around the corner. The area is known as the 'theatre village'.

The pub is on the corner of Westgate Road and Thornton Street; this has been paved and pedestrianised and is home to a small vintage Sunday market in the summer which spills out from The Settledown Cafe on Thornton Street. It is also used for the Chinese New Year Festival. Tilleys is in close proximity of Newcastle's 'China Town', again only about 100 yards away.

How to get there

Tilleys Bar is only about 300 yards from Newcastle Central railway station, north west of it. The pub is very easy to find.

Bus: Any that travel down Westgate Road, along Clayton Street, or to Central Station

Quaylink bus: Central Station

Metro: Central Station

Rail: Newcastle.  Come out of the main station entrance, cross over Neville Street; bear left then immediately right up Pink Lane. Cross over Clayton Street; Pink Lane joins Westgate Road. Tilleys Bar is 50 metres further up on the left.

Night Bus: There are 3 night buses operated by Go North East that pick up and drop off in Newcastle.  For more details, please visit www.simplygo.com/our-services/night-buses

A bit about the outlet

Tilleys Bar ia a traditional English city pub, and, although it had a major re-furbishment back in 2004, it retains it's original charm and comfort.

It has a fantastic range of real ales, draught lagers and an exstensive range of bottled beers and ciders from around the globe. The main bar is L-shaped, with a small room off the side - available for use for small parties, meetings or functions, but also our regular mini theatre every night for films and with matinees at weekends. AND IT'S FREE!

The Head Of Steam Ltd took over on 1st November 2004. The range of products has been increased considerably and it now has several draught lagers and beers unlike anywhere else in Newcastle. Go to our drinks section for a breakdown of what we are currently stocking. We think you will be pleasantly surprised.

A bit about the outlet

The Head Of Steam is just across from Newcastle Central railway station. It has a unique layout - the 2 bars are on the first floor and in the basement! No bar on the ground floor - only the toilets, beer cellar and offices.

The pub has constant acclaim as one of the best bars in the city. It plays up-to-the-minute music and is recognised for its musical brilliance. The upstairs bar is dark and cosy with a very welcoming feel.  The bar gets very crowded most nights and the atmosphere is fantastic

The basement bar is vaulted and low-ceilinged. It has a small stage for bands and this is the 'entry level' venue for new bands in the area - we've been on the glide path of Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park, Futureheads and many more! It is one of very few cellar bars in the city. The basement is open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights with popular DJs (and it's free entry!)
